Eligibility to Sponsor Other Relatives
There are several eligibility criteria to sponsor a relative like a nephew, niece, uncle, and aunt. The sponsor should be:

- At least 18 years of age or more
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Residing in Canada
- Free from debt or bankruptcy proceedings

Duration of Undertaking
The undertaking to sponsor your other relatives to Canada is of ten years duration. The period of ten years begins as soon your relative becomes a permanent resident of Canada. The relative will not have any access to social assistance for this period. A sponsor will have to pay the amount back to the government if they receive any social assistance.
The undertaking extends to a spouse or child of your relative. The facility of social assistance to the disabled will not affect the sponsorship application.
The sponsor should be a lonely person having no spouse or common-law partner. However, one need not be a lonely sponsor if the relative is below 18 years of age and an orphan.
Bankruptcy and Criminal Sentences
Sponsoring other relatives is not allowed if the sponsor is filing for bankruptcy. One can only obtain eligibility to sponsor the relative after the discharge of bankruptcy. It is better to seek the guidance of a bankruptcy consultant to know your options.
Similarly, a criminal conviction can also disqualify you from becoming a sponsor for another relative. Most restrictions depend on the severity of the crime. However, the sponsor may obtain eligibility if the sentence is more than five years old and has no past criminal record outside Canada for the same period.

There are alternative options to sponsor your brother or sister below 18 years of age and have lost both parents. You must quality as a sponsor by fulfilling or standard criteria mentioned above. However, you may sponsor your brother or sister who is more than 18 years of age if you are a lonely sponsor. A lonely sponsor does not have:
- Mother
- Father
- Child
- Spouse
- Common-law partner
- Conjugal partner
- Grandparents
