Applying for Super Visa

Super Visa is suitable for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents subject to fulfillment of specific eligibility criteria. It does not permit dependents to apply as Super Visa is only applicable to parents and grandparents. They can also include their spouses or common-law partners in the Super Visa applications.

The applicants of Super Visa should:

  • Provide a letter of invitation from the child or grandchild
  • Be a parent/grandparent (including spouses and common-law partners) of either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
  • Provide valid proof like a birth certificate that has the names of parents or grandparents to establish a parental relationship with the child or grandchild.
  • Be able to prove that their child/grandchild has a minimum income threshold.
  • Have to provide a written letter by the child/grandchild mentioning the expenses occurring from the visit shall be borne by them, and they will support applicants of Super Visa for the entire duration of the stay.
  • Clearly state that their intentions are that of a genuine Canadian visitor and shall leave by their own choice at the end of the visit period.
  • Offer documentary evidence that the child or grandchild fulfills minimum criteria of Low income CUT-Off (LICO)
  • Hold at least a year’s Canadian medical insurance coverage.

Assessment of Super Visa applications

One may require submitting additional documents as per the requirement of local visa offices. Canada visa offices outside Canada process the Super Visa applications. There are multiple factors to consider for the assessment of the Super Visa application.

Some of these factors are:

  • Purpose of Canada visit
  • Likelihood of maintaining ties with the home country
  • Number of family relations and details of the property and other financial investments in the home country
  • Medical examination

Eligible sponsors of Super Visa applicants

The sponsor must fulfill the financial criteria to be eligible for a Super Visa of their parents or grandparents. One is eligible to invite parents and grandparents if they fulfill the following conditions:

  • Permanent resident or citizen of Canada having age of 18 or more
  • Either exceed or meet the Minimum Necessary income criteria
  • Submit three Notices at Assessment to establish fulfillment of the minimum income requirement criteria
  • Ready to give an undertaking that commits the sponsor to support parents or grandparents during their stay in Canada
  • Commitment to repay provincial social assistance benefits, if any
  • Need to sign an additional undertaking, if sponsor lives in Quebec

The conditions to meet the financial criteria are more lenient than a PR sponsorship. One should have almost 30 percent less income than PR sponsorship. The gross income should exceed the Minimum Necessary Income only for one year as against three years for PR sponsorship.
